Trupp Cooking School
Combining Michelin skills with food science for those who love to eat and learn.
"Most definitely one of Melbourne's best cooking schools"
- The Foodies' Guide to Melbourne 2013
Trupp Cooking School, located next to Prahran Market in the heart of Melbourne’s food hub, is the brainchild of internationally renowned chef and cooking teacher Walter Trupp and his nutritionist wife Dorota, the authors of Trupps’ Wholefood Kitchen.
It is here that the zealous home cook can access the skills and techniques of an award-winning master cook and the extensive knowledge of an expert in nourishment. Together, Walter and Dorota guide students through a series of interactive, fun and uniquely designed courses – each a culinary journey like no other.
Walter and Dorota teach everything from mastering basic knife skills and learning the secrets of wholefood health, to presentation techniques that will lift everyday mealtimes and dinner parties to a whole new level.
From the novice to the experienced, students have fun learning how to make better food choices by touring Melbourne’s best markets, and how to prepare the healthiest, tastiest meals – dishes that not only improve your wellbeing but give you abundant energy so you can always perform at your best.
The courses are available in ‘sit-down’ and ‘hands-on’ formats, with intimate classes being the norm. The school, which is equipped with the latest appliances and utensils, can also be booked for private lessons or corporate functions (up to 20 people). Team-building cooking challenges and entertaining cook-up parties are just some of the highly popular events in Walter’s ever-evolving repertoire.
7 reasons why you should attend Trupp Cooking School
1. For more than 7 years we have taught people like you how to cook for, nourish and entertain one person or many – all through our personal introduction to the amazing world of food.
2. Walter, our chef, worked in and managed some of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in the world and led celebrated cooking classes, prior to opening this, his own cooking school.
3. Dorota (BHSc Nut Med, Dip Env Pro) is a qualified nutritionist and an environmentalist. She contributes regularly to the magazines Australian Natural Health and Nourish. She is also an author, public speaker and food photographer.
4. All classes are fully hands-on, guided, interactive and fun. From our experience, this is the only way for you to learn about food and improve your cooking skills.
5. We keep our class numbers low so that we can spend lots of ‘one on one’ time with you and show you every little detail of food preparation. This also means we can run our classes for longer.
6. Our kitchen is wonderfully over-equipped. You will cook in copper and Le Creuset pots and get to try out leading appliances.
7. We host the best corporate functions and will give you exactly what you are after. We have some great corporate offers but we are also happy to go out of our way to design a special event for you.

Testimonials by our students:
"Trupp Cooking School is not just a place to learn about food; it is the kind of place that can literally change your life. In fact, in my case, it helped do just that. When I booked in for my first cooking class with Walter, I was a curious home-cook with a desire to hone my skills for when friends came around. Instead of simply developing said skills, Walter’s culinary expertise and holistic approach to health and well-being, developed into an obsession… and I suddenly began to see food as more than just a hobby- it became a way of life! Through Walter and Dorota’s classes, encouragement and friendship, my skill-set and knowledge began to expand, far beyond my initial expectations; to the point where I knew I could no longer be just a weekend kitchen warrior.
The Trupp Cooking School environment is absolutely ideal for anyone hoping to take their cooking to the next level; whether that is learning to poach an egg for the first time, ferment their first kombucha, or to advance a well-stocked arsenal of techniques even further. Every class is a new opportunity to gain some seriously mad skills… But I warn you... You won’t be able to stop at one! See you there!"

"Last night I had the pleasure of doing a cooking-class at Trupp Cooking School along with Nat from The Pagoda Tree, Lola Berry and Crystal from Eat. Sleep. Move. The topic was fermentation, and everything tasted so amazing. I feel completely nourished today!"

"Attending Walter and Dorota Trupp’s Cooking School yesterday and learning about sustainable fish was fabulous. A truly impressive experience, wonderful way to learn and fabulous environment.
If you’re in Melbourne, book now. Seriously! Even if you can’t cook or just want to eat deliciousness for a day. GO!
I found the Trupps via their cookbook, spotted in a local library here in Melbourne. It’s a very informative and easy read. I love their style of insight and care to people having healthy lives. There’s loads to learn about plastics, pesticides, eating well and creating time to do so!
Happy day to you,"

"It is very inspiring to discover a chef who is generous with his knowledge. The Trupp Cooking School offers an extensive range of classes about cooking and nutrition. Located near Prahran Market, this inviting space was created by Walter Trupp and his nutritionist wife, Dorota. There is a long benchtop/counter around which a small group of students can sit comfortably. Any seat is a good seat – an unobstructed view can be had from any angle. My husband and I enrolled in the class Knife Skills, as we each have our own knives – he has Aritsugu carbon steel knives, handmade with wood and bone handles and I have a hand-me-down cleaver and a sharp and shiny Shun knife (I don’t use his knives and he doesn’t use mine). Walter demonstrates and explains the techniques to julienne, chop, cut, bone, etc. as well as the proper way to sharpen knives. He passed around knives so that we could feel the difference between a knife that is of excellent, good or poor quality. He discussed cutting boards and how to wash them thoroughly to prevent contamination. Walter encourages questions and is very engaging. He stepped out from behind the counter to check each person’s efforts as we practiced on the fruits/vegetables with the supplied knives and board. I highly recommend this class for those keen to learn from a real expert. I purchased the book Trupps’ Wholefood Kitchen – Eat well, live well, feel great to which I’ve already begun to affix post-it notes. This is not just a cookbook, it’s a plain English commentary about how we take care of ourselves when it comes to what we eat."
"I had the pleasure of attending Trupp Cooking School's Christmas BBQ course in December.
What a fantastic class!
Walter and Dorota have created their school to reflect what they know and love about food. It's obvious that they have thought of everything, and tapping into their combined knowledge about cooking, nutrition and sustainability is a must for any budding home cook!
Booking the course online was simple. The space is large and incredibly well spaced with high quality cookware and appliances. You really do feel like you've walked into the dream kitchen of a top chef.
Walter is a gifted teacher; delivering his class in a straightforward but engaging way, often adding humor to the mix. I was made to feel right at home, regardless of my experience as a cook, and there seemed to be ample opportunity to ask questions about anything food related. Although the Christmas BBQ course was only 3 hour class, I learnt loads of techniques for cooking and preparation that i have already taken with me and applied to my own cooking. More than anything else, I had a great time! This was easily the best cooking class I've ever attended and I'll definitely be signing up to do Chef Essentials in 2012!"

"It has been an absolute delight to attend the Trupp Cooking School. Walter's knowledge and expertise surpasses anything I have experienced from a culinary teacher.
He provides a fantastic environment to explore the world of food. Not only do you learn to cook exquisite dishes, but you also get a great insight into how a chef prepares and shops for ingredients.
I have just recently completed Walter's Tasting School, which was the most educational and fun experience I have ever had in cooking.
Walter's encouraging and friendly nature inspires you to work for beyond what you thought could ever be achieved in the kitchen. I look forward to doing many more of your classes"

"Thanks Walter, what a fabulous time I have had doing your cooking courses over past two months. I have learnt so much and it has given me the confidence to create some wonderful meals and dinners at home for friends and Rita. It was a bonus also in learning the skills and understanding what to look for when it comes to buying the best grades of fish and meat. You provide a holistic course which made it even more enjoyable and valuable. I am looking forward to my next fun cooking adventure with you."
- Paul Harmer
"Thank you for hosting an amayzing class yesterday, you and your wife are truly passionate about what you teach and it clearly shows! I thoroughly enjoyed it!"
- Kelly Michelakis
" I have completed about 5 sensational classes with Walter & have found them to be the most rewarding & comprehensive classes I have done.
Walter & Dorota are extremely welcoming into their very homely & modern classroom kitchen which has all the modern equipment & tools you need to excel.
His knowledge, techniques & diversity in cooking from his world class background, allows his pupils to get the most out of every class.
He has a very down to earth nature which makes his classes a lot of fun and the class atmosphere is a very relaxed & exciting place to be.
I cannot wait for the new year to see what classes are install for me.
I also was the lucky winner of the draw for a brand new Kitchen Aid. (I love it)
Thank you so much Walter."

"I have attended many cooking classes but those held at Trupp Cooking School are second to none. Class sizes are small and importantly there is plenty of equipment and tools for everyone. The dishes and techniques I have learnt have been truly amazing and best of all is the opportunity to be taught from such a credentialed Chef as Walter Trupp. His talent and passion id extraordinary and he truly enjoys passing his vast knowledge to the students. I am looking forward to attending many more classes in 2012."
